A. BACKGROUND


The world of Islamic boarding schools is an Islamic educational institution wherein it learns religious knowledge. Like the classical books, and other Shari'a books. And in its development, Islamic boarding schools have made progress that does not only dwell on the study of religion or classical books, but also the teaching of present day general sciences that have been introduced, including technology.


The existence of various fields of scientific progress adopted by Islamic boarding schools remains a concern and supervision of pesantren, because this needs to be done by pesantren to anticipate problems, especially in filtering the negative impact of present day science which will damage the image of the Islamic boarding school itself, so that its programming is also limited and only for certain purposes.


In this regard, Islamic boarding schools are not only a forum for studying Islamic religious knowledge but also as a vehicle for empowering the people. This is due to the progress of Islamic boarding schools from time to time. As we all know that the vision and mission of Islamic boarding schools are not public secrets, but the function and role of Islamic boarding schools are indeed true as people empowering people from various fields such as; syi'ar religion (da'wah) study of books, history, arts and culture, natural sciences, astronomy, technology, sports, politics, economics, and so forth.


Visibly there is a reciprocity between Islamic boarding schools and the community (ummah) that cannot be separated because they are two continuous sides, therefore the authors will describe the role of Islamic boarding schools in empowering the people. With the above background and the formulation of the problem taken, it is hoped that it will become a meeting point for evidence against the title of the paper above.

DISCUSSION

 

A. DEFINITION OF BOARDING BOARDS

Pondok comes from Arabic funduuq (فندوق) which means lodging. a simple dormitory or guesthouse, because the cottage is indeed a simple shelter for students/students who are far from their place of origin (Zamahsyari Dhofir, 1982: 18).[1]

Pesantren is a religious institution and vehicle as well as a community of students who "recite" Islamic religious knowledge. Islamic boarding school as an institution is not only synonymous with Islamic meaning, but also contains the meaning of authenticity (native) Indonesia, because its existence began to be known in the period of the 13th-17th century AD, and in Java in the 15th-16th century AD.[2]

Pesantren is a religious educational institution that has its own characteristics and is different from other educational institutions. Education in pesantren includes Islamic education, da'wah, community development and other similar education. The students at the pesantren are called santri who generally live in the pesantren. The place where the students live, in the pesantren environment, is called the Pondok. This is where the term Islamic boarding school arises.[3]

Pesantren is a subculture of education in Indonesia so that in the face of renewal it will give a unique color.[4]

From some of the opinions above, there are no differences with other customized structures. The views of the figures towards Islamic boarding schools have similarities, which these similarities refer to Islamic religious education which is characterized by recitation of the yellow book, recitation of Islamic law, and religious knowledge.

In another explanation, it is stated that Pesantren is a place where students learn Islamic religious knowledge. The customized structure of the pesantren comes from the individualized organization "santri" which means students who study Islamic religion. Called pesantren or pesantren because all students who study or thalabul ilmi in pesantren are called santri. Not known as students or students. The term santri is a standard concept, even though the meaning is the same as students, students, or students.

In Indonesia, pesantren is an educational institution that has long been known since the colonial era, the age of pesantren is very old and has never been hit by changing times.[5]

Modernization has penetrated into various fields of human life, including Islamic boarding schools.
